Vitalik Explains the Three-Stage Evolution Strategy of Ethereum Rollup Security Model

According to Gate.io News bot, as reported by Wu, Vitalik published an article detailing the evolution strategy of the Ethereum Rollup security model. This model is divided into three stages, based on the coverage of the trustless proof system by the security committee: Stage 0 is fully controlled by the security committee; Stage 1 requires at least 75% (6/8) of the consent votes and participation of at least 3 external members; Stage 2 will intervene only when a verifiable error occurs in the proof system. Vitalik pointed out through mathematical model analysis that, given a 10% "failure" probability for each member of the security council, L2 should be deployed directly from Stage 1 rather than remaining in Stage 0. He also emphasized that one should not rashly enter Stage 2 before strengthening the security of the underlying proof system, and suggested that data providers (such as L2beat) display auditing and maturity metrics of the proof system for evaluation reference.

Vitalik: The quality of the underlying proof systems of L2 networks is equally important and should gradually enter the second phase as they develop.

Odaily News In response to community member Daniel Wang's proposed naming label BattleTested for the L2 network Stage 2 phase, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik stated on the X platform: "This is a good reminder: the second phase is not the only factor affecting security; the quality of the underlying proof system is equally important. This is a simplified mathematical model that shows when to enter the second phase:" Each member of the Security Council has a 10% independent "break" chance; we consider event failure (signature refusal or key inaccessible) and security failure (incorrect signing or key being hacked) as equally likely; the goal: to minimize the possibility of protocol collapse under the above assumptions. Phase 0 Security Council is 4/7, Phase 1 is 6/8; please note that these assumptions are very imperfect. In fact,

Scroll has become the first zk-Rollup to reach Stage 1 status.

Gate.io News bot message, Scroll co-founder Ye Zhang announced that Scroll has become the first zk-Rollup to reach Stage 1 status through the Euclid update. This update implements three key improvements: users have sufficient exit time before system changes, arbitrary upgrades are prohibited; users have the authority to submit transactions directly on Layer 1, eliminating censorship risk; when the sequencer or prover goes down, the network automatically opens to everyone to maintain system operation. The L2 Rollup maturity framework divides Rollup into three stages: Stage 0 includes characteristics such as operator control and L1 on L2 state root; Stage 1 features smart contract management, complete proof systems, and a 7-day exit window; Stage 2 achieves full smart contract management, decentralized proof systems, and a 30-day exit window.
