Bitcoin miner Iris Energy Limited (NASDAQ:IREN) recently announced that it has increased its total Computing Power to 9 EH/s, expects to reach 10 EH/s by May, and plans to expand to 20 EH/s by the end of the year. In addition, the Iris mining rig is ready to increase its efficiency to 21.9 J/t. Iris also said that an additional 50 megawatts of capacity will be added if Childress Phase 3 is completed later this year. By the end of 2024, this expansion will increase the company's data center capacity from 460 MW to 510 MW. The upcoming 50-megawatt addition is partly due to new substation designs, as well as improvements and efficiencies in the company's construction and acquisition processes. China’s Treasury Holdings Drop Dramatically, Raising Red Flags for U.S. Markets China has significantly reduced its stake in the U.S. Treasury market, which was 14% in 2011 and dropped to 3% by the end of 2023. The decline continued in the first quarter of 2024, as Bloomberg’s Masaki Kondo and Iris Ouyang report that China sold $53.3 billion in agency bonds and Treasury notes. As the second-largest foreign holder of U.S. Treasury securities, China’s substantial sell-off could potentially unsettle the Treasury market and raise U.S. borrowing costs. Stephen Chiu, Bloomberg Intelligence’s chief Asia foreign exchange and rates strategist, noted that the pace of these changes could accelerate. “As China is selling both despite the fact that we are closer to a Fed rate-cut cycle, there should be a clear intention of diversifying away from U.S. dollar holdings,” Chiu remarked. “China’s selling of U.S. securities could speed up as U.S.-China trade war resumes,” he added. There are concerns that China might use its Treasury holdings as leverage in the ongoing U.S.-China trade tensions and disputes over issues like Taiwan. Offloading bonds could be perceived as an economic weapon against the United States. Some former Chinese officials have suggested reducing Treasury holdings to mitigate exposure to perceived risks from increasing U.S. debt levels. This has led to speculation that China may be seeking to diversify away from the dollar and U.S. assets. China’s holdings of U.S. Treasury debt can impact the U.S. economy in various ways, including higher interest rates due to decreased demand for U.S. debt, compelling the government to offer higher yields to attract investors. China’s substantial sell-off of U.S. Treasuries could also exert downward pressure on the U.S. dollar.
