Elon Musk Steps Back from Political Party Plans: Reality Wins Over Vision

Elon Musk has decided to shelve his ambitious plans to launch a new political party, only weeks after telling his 200 million followers on X that his “American Party” would be the answer to the dysfunctional two-party system. According to the Wall Street Journal, Musk privately admitted he doesn’t want to risk fracturing the conservative vote or upsetting high-ranking Republicans — especially now, with Donald Trump back in the White House and Vice President JD Vance seen as a likely successor in 2028.

Fear of Splitting the Conservative Base Musk reportedly told close associates that continuing with the party project could jeopardize his relationship with Vance. Instead, he has stayed in close contact with him in recent weeks and is even considering financially backing a potential 2028 presidential run. Back in the 2024 elections, Musk invested around $300 million into Republican campaigns — and insiders claim a similar level of support is expected in the future.

Political Efforts Pushed Aside At the end of July, Musk canceled a scheduled call with a group specializing in third-party ballot access. Participants were told he wanted to focus entirely on his companies. This effectively halted preparations to get a new party on ballots in key states. Even his closest political advisers from the 2024 campaign cycle are no longer discussing the new party project with him. Republican consultants warned that anyone seen assisting Musk could be blacklisted from Trump’s circle — a risk that discouraged many. The Libertarian Party tried to offer itself as a ready-made platform, but according to its chairman Steven Nekhaila, Musk never responded. “It’s almost an eerie silence,” Nekhaila said.

Vance, Trump, and Musk: A Fragile Balance Musk’s decision ultimately benefits Republicans. A new party could have siphoned votes away from Trump’s allies, weakening Vance as well. Earlier this month, Vance stated that breaking away from Trump and the conservative movement would be “a mistake,” adding that he hopes Musk “returns to the fold” by mid-election season. Tensions between Trump and Musk flared earlier this year over Trump’s spending package, but both men have recently toned down their rhetoric. Musk stopped criticizing Trump on X, while Trump wrote on Truth Social that he wants Musk and his companies to “prosper,” calling their success good for the country. The Trump administration even reviewed and decided to keep most of SpaceX’s federal contracts, deemed critical for both the Pentagon and NASA. A new executive order could now further benefit the company by speeding up rocket launch approvals.

Support from Yang and Cuban Fizzles Out Musk’s American Party idea initially attracted attention from other figures as well. Andrew Yang admitted to holding talks with Musk’s team, and billionaire Mark Cuban publicly supported the idea after Musk’s July announcement. However, both later confirmed that no further discussions have taken place.
