ENSv2 Progress Update: Evaluating three scaling solutions, including public ZK chain, proprietary ZK chain, and custom zkVM
On September 10th, ENSv2 released progress updates, with the current ENSv2 architecture focusing on three options:
The first option involves directly extending ENS to existing public ZK blockchains (such as Scroll and Taiko, etc.), or can utilize Optimistic L2 with ZK proof function. This option has the lowest long-term development and maintenance costs, but sacrifices to some extent the independence of ENS governance on public chains. The second option is to deploy a self-owned ZK chain instance, which provides the team with greater flexibility. The third option involves developing a custom zkVM (Zero-Knowledge Virtual Machine) specifically optimized for ENS operations, and is exploring this option in partnership with Axiom.
The ENS team will test the performance, cost efficiency, and scalability of three pathways, using specific data to guide their decision-making. They are improving the ENSv2 architecture, including a layered registry system and an updated universal resolver. To support this work, the ENS DAO is preparing a funding proposal that will outline the resources needed to implement ENS V2. The current goal of the team is to propose a final recommendation for the ENS V2 L2 strategy in the coming months.
