Trump pushes for "historic" 5% spending target at NATO summit
Gate News bot reported, according to the well-known financial blog ZeroHedge, that President Trump will arrive in The Hague, Netherlands on June 24 to attend an important NATO summit aimed at securing unprecedented defense spending commitments from allies, a topic he has advocated for years. This year's summit is preparing to set a bold new defense spending target for each member country, which is 5% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP), more than double the current Benchmark of 2%.
Trump's whirlwind 24-hour visit to the Netherlands comes amid a geopolitical storm in the Middle East, with a near outbreak of peace between Iran and Israel (reportedly a ceasefire) following U.S. airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend. Iran carried out a "dramatic" attack on U.S. bases in response, as the airstrikes aimed to prevent Tehran from pursuing nuclear weapons.
Due to the escalating tensions in the Middle East, the U.S. President's remarks at NATO were brief, just as his comments were a week ago during the G7 summit in Canada. Despite the shortened agenda, he is expected to address several other urgent issues, including the ongoing war in Ukraine, sanctions against Russia, and the future of U.S. military posture in Europe.
In addition, everyone's attention will be focused on the interactions between Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron (who recently criticized Macron for his remarks on Iran) as well as with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who remains uneasy about Trump's interest in acquiring Greenland.
