HISTORIC STEP TOWARDS HOMEOWNERSHIP WITH CRYPTO

Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Chairman William Pulte, in an order given to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac on June 25, 2025, requested that work be done to consider cryptocurrencies as "collateral" in first home loans. This decision anticipates that assets such as Bitcoin and Solana in crypto wallets — when held in U.S. regulated exchanges — can be taken into account in mortgage risk analyses without being converted into dollars.
Previously, these GSEs recognized only crypto that had been sold and converted to USD. This new step, dependent on the current management, aims to assess the debtor's financial profile more holistically and potentially broaden the opportunities for obtaining a home loan.
The obligation states that the evaluation of cryptocurrency held in US-based, regulated exchanges is required; it also calls for risk reduction based on crypto volatility. This is a development in line with the Trump administration's vision of making "the US a crypto hub."
This decision is of transformative importance in terms of the mortgage and financial system: The assets of crypto investors could be accepted as a reserve for home loans in the future. According to the FDA, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac should implement this regulation "as quickly as possible."
CONCLUSION: This innovation by the FHFA could facilitate access to credit for homebuyers who own crypto assets and bridge the gap between traditional finance and digital assets.
