The U.S. government announced its intention to put up for sale nearly 3,000 bitcoins worth approximately USD 130 million, seized on the illegal marketplace Silk Road, one of the most controversial dark web marketplaces of the last decade.
According to a notice issued by a Maryland District Court earlier this month, the government intends to make the sale at the direction of the District Attorney's Office.
"The United States hereby notifies its intent to dispose of the forfeited property in such manner as the attorney general may direct," the note reads. It also gives individuals other than the defendants a 60-day window (starting January 10, 2024) to file a claim for the assets.
It is expected that, after the end of the waiting period for a possible claim, the sale of the bitcoins will proceed. At that point, "the United States will have clear title to the property and will be able to guarantee the conveyance to any subsequent purchaser or assignee," the notice reads.
