From the WNBA court farce to the crazy surge in coin prices, the viral marketing behind DILDO coin's tenfold increase in ten days.

The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) was unexpectedly overshadowed by a bizarre "toy invasion" incident.
Starting from July 29, in the 2025 season series of games, a series of green mysterious toys (dildo) were thrown into the WNBA court. So far, there have been three games where spectators maliciously threw toys resembling genitalia onto the field, leading to interruptions in the games and affecting both teams and the game progress.
This incident seems absurd, but behind it is a carefully planned cryptocurrency meme issuance.
Everything started on the WNBA court. In the 2025 season, the league attracted a record number of viewers, with star players like Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Plum becoming cultural icons. However, on July 29, during a game between the Atlanta Dream and the Golden State Valkyries, an unexpected incident broke the tranquility. A fan threw a bright green mysterious toy onto the court, causing a brief interruption in the game. The referees and security quickly cleared the scene, but the moment was captured on camera and went viral on social media.
Just a few days later, similar incidents occurred in succession: on August 5, at the home court of the Chicago Sky, two green mysterious toys landed; during the game of the Los Angeles Sparks, player Kelsey Plum even personally kicked one away. In just two weeks, at least five similar incidents were reported, including a purple variant, provoking a range of reactions from amusement to anger.
Initially, these incidents were seen as isolated pranks or unruly behavior by fans. After police intervention, two men were arrested in Chicago on charges of disturbing the peace.
The truth soon surfaced: a cryptocurrency group publicly acknowledged responsibility. They claimed that the act of throwing mysterious toys was a well-planned "protest" and marketing campaign aimed at promoting their meme coin—Green Dildo Coin (DILDO).
DILDO quietly launched on July 28. The group stated in an interview with USA Today that their goal is to protest the "toxic" environment of the crypto world, including scams, manipulation, and infighting within the community. Through this extreme method, they hope to create a topic, attract attention, and demonstrate that viral spread can be achieved without relying on KOLs.
DILDO is issued on the Solana chain, with the contract address 0x4C3e9772698084B00b413106723E700797921C6b. The name and theme of the coin directly stem from the slang in crypto trading – "green dildo" refers to the huge green candlestick on price charts, symbolizing a surge. The community claims that throwing the mysterious toy is a "glorious protest," but essentially it's low-cost marketing: they only need to spend $200 on the toy and $500 on tickets to gain tens of millions of exposures.
After the event rapidly fermented, DILDO rose from a low of $0.00018 to a peak of $0.00222 on August 9, an increase of nearly 10 times in just one week. Currently, this meme has a market capitalization of $13.96 million, with a 24-hour trading volume of $750,000.
It is worth mentioning that on August 2, the WNBA official mysterious toy merchandise sold out on the first day of its release.
Some Twitter KOLs like @jonnajarian and @gainzy222 discussed this event during a live stream, which fueled further hype. Even Donald Trump Jr. shared a photoshopped image to join the topic discussion, showing his father Trump throwing a green mysterious toy from the White House.
However, this incident has sparked significant controversy. WNBA players and league officials expressed strong dissatisfaction. Players described these actions as "insulting and disrespectful" during post-game interviews, stating that they interfered with their on-court performance. The league has intensified security measures, including body searches and banning suspicious items from entering, and league officials stated that all 13 WNBA teams must install safety nets.
Critics point out that throwing sex toys in a female-dominated league reinforces the stereotype of female athletes being objectified. Slate magazine commented that this is not just a prank, but a mockery of the feminist struggle, especially in the context of WNBA players fighting for higher salaries and rights. The market value of meme coins has even surpassed the annual salaries of some WNBA players, highlighting the absurdity of crypto speculation.
The group spokesperson denied that the arresting individuals were related to them, claiming that the action was a "peaceful protest," but this failed to mask the potential risks: in an X post, someone warned that this is short-term speculation lacking long-term value. Similar incidents are not new—Green Dildo Finance in 2021 and other meme coins in 2024 profited through controversial marketing, but most ultimately collapsed, leaving investors with nothing.
The mysterious toy incident thrown into the WNBA reflects some marketing chaos in the crypto market in 2025. Major coins like Bitcoin and Ethereum are experiencing steady growth, but the meme coin sector is rife with manipulation and scams. At the same time, it also showcases the boundaries of viral marketing on social media, which is constantly being pushed to the extreme.
What is the fate of DILDO coin? It is likely to fade away like many meme coins, becoming a fleeting phenomenon. In any case, this farce has become a peculiar footnote to the intersection of sports and crypto in 2025.
