Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently announced that he will donate a total of 10 million baht to Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Pattaya, Thailand to support animal conservation projects and expand exhibition facilities. The donation is specially named after the zoo's star, a pygmy hippopotamus named Moo Deng, as a gesture of friendship and gratitude to Thailand and its people.

Vitalik Thanks Khao Kheow Zoo: Setting an Example for Animal Welfare and Education

Vitalik Buterin thanked Khao Kheow Zoo in the letter for their warm welcome to him and the visitors. He praised the zoo's commitment to animal welfare, education, and community engagement, and expressed excitement for future facility upgrades, especially the proposed improvements to the habitat of the Pygmy Hippopotamus.

He mentioned that this donation is aimed at further supporting the operation of the zoo and promoting the happiness and health of 'Bouncing Pig' Moo Deng and his family and companions.

Vitalik recalled the Ethereum community's activities in Thailand over the past few months, especially the 'Devcon SEA' event held in Bangkok in November. He said that the success of these events would not have been possible without the warmth and support of the Thai people, and on behalf of the entire Ethereum ecosystem, he expressed deep gratitude.

Vitalik adopts 'Bouncing Pig' Moo Deng, becomes a father of a hippo

As part of the donation, Vitalik has accepted the invitation to become the adoptive father of 'Bouncing Pig' Moo Deng, and will donate 10 million baht to support Moo Deng's family and human caregivers. The donation plan will be carried out in two installments, each 5,000,000 baht. The first installment will be donated on December 26, 2024, and the timing of the second installment will be confirmed within the next year.

Donations will primarily be used for the operation of the zoo, sponsorship programs for wildlife, and creating a dedicated exhibition area for 'Bouncing Pig' Moo Deng and his family. He emphasized that this donation is unconditional and allows the zoo to flexibly use the funds as needed.

In the end of the letter, Vitalik expressed his hope that the bouncing pig, Moo Deng, can grow healthily and promote the common prosperity of the zoo, Thai community, and the global Ethereum family. He wrote: 'I look forward to seeing Moo Deng grow strong and witnessing how our big family and community thrive together.'
