Trump reiterated support for Morocco's claim to sovereignty over Western Sahara.
According to Jin10 data on August 3, the Moroccan official news agency Maghreb Arab Press (MAP) reported on Saturday that US President Trump again stated support for Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara, saying that the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco is the only solution to the dispute. In this long-standing unresolved conflict, Morocco views the region as its territory, while the Algeria-backed Polisario Front seeks to establish an independent state. Trump acknowledged Morocco's claim of sovereignty over Western Sahara—an area rich in phosphate reserves and fishing grounds—at the end of his first presidential term, as part of Morocco's agreement to normalize relations with Israel. US Secretary of State Rubio made it clear in April this year that supporting Morocco on this issue remains US policy, but this is the first time Trump has publicly commented on the dispute during his second term.
